About Nunavut Protected Areas Network

The Nunavut Protected Areas Network is an extensive system of parks, wildlife sanctuaries, national parks, and marine conservation areas that spans the territory of Nunavut, Canada’s northernmost and largest region. Covering vast stretches of Arctic tundra, coastal cliffs, islands, and ocean, this network protects fragile ecosystems and significant cultural heritage sites of the Inuit people. Geographically, the network includes locations such as Auyuittuq National Park on Baffin Island, Quttinirpaaq National Park on Ellesmere Island—the second largest national park in Canada—and Tallurutiup Imanga National Marine Conservation Area in Lancaster Sound, one of the largest marine protected areas in the world. Ecologically, it harbors unique Arctic flora and fauna like polar bears, muskoxen, Arctic wolves, narwhals, and migratory birds. The remote and rugged environment calls for specialized travel methods including hiking, sea kayaking, camping on tundra, and snowmobiling in winter. Many areas within the network provide visitors with a chance to witness stark natural beauty, Arctic wildlife, and Inuit culture and traditions. The protected lands also conserve archeological sites and represent important sites for ongoing Indigenous stewardship. Access is typically by air or boat, with few developed visitor facilities, attracting those seeking solitude and adventure in a dramatically different climate and landscape. Safety planning and respect for the environment and culture are essential for visitors. The Nunavut Protected Areas Network represents a crucial effort to preserve the Arctic wilderness and support sustainable tourism and traditional land uses.
